Anti-Semitism


[In the late 1930s, a letter came from a German publisher who wanted to print a German edition of Tolkien's The Hobbit. German law of the time required authors to prove that they were "Aryan" before they could be published.]

“I regret that I am not clear as to what you mean by "arisch" (Aryan). I am not of Aryan extraction: that is, Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Pashto, Hindustani, Persian, Roma-Gypsy, or any related Aryan dialects.”
